ABSTRACT

The objective of this project was to predict the number of cases of infections and deaths from covid-19 through the application of artificial intelligence techniques in order to validate the effectiveness of a statistical model and counteract congestion in the health area within the territory. Ecuadorian, the rapid spread that caused serious consequences in the health systems and the virus triggered a global health crisis, the drastic impact on people's lives caused the application of Artificial Neural Networks-RNA techniques to obtain rapid diagnoses and effective. Historical data from the Ecuadorian state about the infections and deaths recorded per day were taken, the data was processed using the time series statistical method technique and later in the RNA models for the generation of the prediction and validation of the statistical method, the results obtained from each of the neural networks provided a feasible forecast that was close to the real values. The main conclusions show that the techniques applied in this project are efficient when predicting the number of cases of infection and death from covid-19 based on historical data and that the use of neural networks is very useful for solving various predictive problems. © 2022 Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions. ABSTRACT

Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome is a polyradiculoneuropathy that has been associated with infectious diseases as triggers. There is currently little medical evidence exploring the relationship between the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection and long Covid. Objective: To synthesize the medical evidence that describes the relationship between post Covid syndrome and Guillain-Barré syndrome in the paediatric population. Methodology: A scoping review was developed using Scopus and PubMed databases, including analytical and/or descriptive experimental and observational studies. Results: The main clinical manifestations presented by paediatric patients were distal and ascending weakness in the lower limbs and myalgia. The diagnostic approach was based on clinical findings, imaging findings on spinal magnetic resonance and electromyography. The therapeutic strategy is based on the use of intravenous human immunoglobulins. Conclusion: Guillain-Barré syndrome is a frequent disease in the paediatric population with active SARS-CoV-2 infection or in survivors, however, it is necessary to encourage further clinical studies that increase the medical literature that describes this association.

ABSTRACT

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, careers in medicine were challenging, and the academic journey could be a lonely one. The pandemic presented both challenges and opportunities in mentoring such as utilizing technology to transform formal mentorship programs into those that are beneficial for women and minorities because these programs can offer critical engagement, opportunities to hear and express multiple perspectives, expand our capacity to understand and talk about complex social issues, and meaning-making frameworks. Medical schools can utilize innovative and creative mentoring programs to support medical students as they enter the medical profession. © Common Ground Research Networks, Joseph Muñoz et al., All Rights Reserved.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, different drugs and medications have been used for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection. Likewise, various investigations have been carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these interventions, many of which have been shown to generate more harm than benefit for the patient, for this reason it is necessary to standardize the management of adult patients with COVID-19 in our context. Objective: To provide evidence-based clinical recommendations for the management of adults with COVID-19. Methods: A guideline development group (GEG) was formed that included medical specialists and methodologists. For its elaboration, GEG decided to carry out a rapid adaptation of the Guide for the care of critical adult patients with COVID-19 in the Americas of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as well as to carry out searches for novo questions. For the formulation of the recommendations, the evidence frameworks for the decision (EtD) of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology were developed. Results: This CPG addressed 28 clinical questions, divided into three topics: prevention, diagnosis and management. Based on these questions, 33 recommendations (16 strong and 17 conditional), 26 good clinical practices (GCP) and 2 flowcharts were formulated. This CPG was published in its third version in December 2021 Conclusion: This article summarizes the methodology and evidence-based conclusions of the CPG for the management of adults with COVID 19 in EsSalud. © 2022 Publicado por Cuerpo Médico Hospital Nacional Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by the outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the way classes in higher education are conducted. Physical classrooms were suddenly change to virtual ones, with little or no preparation or knowledge of how to use the tools needed to conduct classes in this manner. We present the results of a study conducted with teachers in a computer engineering program that seeks to understand they were able to respond to the sudden change and how they were able to overcome the limitations and challenges that were brought upon them by having to migrate © 2021 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the population of the countries of Latin America (LA) depends, to a large extent, on the public policies, and particularly on the health actions, that governments have adopted to confront the social and health crisis the pandemic has brought. Older people deserve special attention as one of the most vulnerable demographic groups to this infectious disease. The objectives of this work are: firstly, to examine the COVID-19 trend from confirmed cases and mortality due to this cause among older persons from a group of LA countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay) and Spain. Secondly, to explore actions and policies put in place in these countries to support older persons in particular, during the first wave of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: SARS-CoV2 virus or COVID-19 has been associated with increased prothrombotic risk especially in the critical care setting, resulting in increased venous thromboembolism (VTE) related morbidity. The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of VTE among patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the United States and whether there is a need for more aggressive prophylaxis. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature review of PubMed and Cochrane database from inception to September 2020 was performed for studies that evaluated the incidence of VTE, including pulmonary embolism (PE), and/or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the United States. We used “(Coronavirus OR COVID-19 OR SARS-Cov-2) AND (venous thromboembolism, VTE OR deep vein thrombosis, DVT OR pulmonary embolism (PE) )”. Finally, we screened reference lists from evaluated full texts. This study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Case reports and studies including cancer populations were excluded. Results: A total of 973 patients hospitalized in the United States were included from, 3 multicenter and 2 single-center retrospective studies. Of those, 3 retrospective studies determined the incidence of VTE in critically ill patients only. Most studies reported universal in-hospital (95.3%). The overall incidence of VTE was 16.8% and 12% despite prophylactic anticoagulation. Interestingly, subgroup analysis in critically ill patients demonstrated an incidence of VTE of 27.5% and 26.5% despite prophylactic anticoagulation. The overall incidence of DVT was 7.3% and 22.5% in critically ill patients admitted to ICU. PE with or without DVT occurred in 9.5% of patients, 5% in critically ill patients and 2.9% was detected despite anticoagulation. Conclusions: VTE was found at an alarming rate in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the United States and often presented as PE. Assessment of VTE risk is strongly recommended in patients with COVID-19. Given the observed higher than average pulmonary embolism incidence despite prophylactic anticoagulation, randomized trials are needed to determine whether there is any potential benefit of prophylactic IVC filter placement in patients with COVID-19, especially in the critical care setting.
